Micro-investing Apps (Raiz, Spaceship, Pearler)
By Dr KH Asadul ยท General information only, not personal advice
If you only have $20 a week to spare, you can't buy traditional shares on the ASX, where the minimum first trade is usually $500. This is the problem __micro-investing apps__ were built to solve.
Micro-investing Apps (Raiz, Spaceship, Pearler)
These apps act as a "wrapper" around the stock market. You send them your spare change, and they pool your money with thousands of other users to buy ETFs and shares on your behalf (using the Custodial model we covered in Block 11).
While the landscape is crowded, three platforms dominate the Australian market in 2026. Here is how they compare.
1. Raiz (The "Spare Change" Pioneer)
Raiz is famous for its "Round-Up" feature. If you buy a coffee for $4.50, Raiz rounds the transaction up to $5.00, automatically withdrawing the 50 cents from your bank account and investing it into a portfolio of ETFs.
- Best for: Absolute beginners who struggle to save money and need investing to happen invisibly in the background.
- The Catch (Fees): Raiz charges a flat monthly account keeping fee. As of 2026, the standard 'Regular' plan costs $5.50 per month, while the 'Plus' plan (which allows you to select custom ETFs and some individual stocks) costs $6.50 per month. If you only have $100 invested, a $5.50 monthly fee equals a massive 66% annual fee, instantly wiping out any investment returns. Raiz only becomes mathematically viable once your balance grows over $2,000.
2. Spaceship Voyager (The "Thematic" Approach)
Instead of rounding up spare change, Spaceship asks you to set up a regular weekly or monthly transfer. It is unique because, instead of tracking a boring, broad market index, Spaceship actively picks a portfolio of specific global companies focused on "where the world is going" (like tech, AI, and green energy).
- Best for: Investors who want exposure to exciting, high-growth global tech companies without having to research individual stocks.
- The Catch (Fees & Risk): Spaceship charges a $3 monthly fee for balances over $100, plus a percentage-based management fee (e.g. 0.50% per year for their Universe portfolio). Also, because Spaceship focuses heavily on specific sectors like tech, it is far more volatile than a standard broad-market ETF. If the tech sector crashes, Spaceship crashes with it.
3. Pearler (The "Long-Term" Automator)
Pearler isn't strictly just a micro-investing app; it is a full CHESS-sponsored broker that added a micro-investing feature. It is built explicitly for the "FIRE" (Financial Independence, Retire Early) community, heavily discouraging day-trading and focusing entirely on automating long-term ETF investing.
- Best for: Investors who want to start small using Pearler Micro, but want a seamless pathway to upgrade to direct, CHESS-sponsored ETF ownership on the same platform once their balances grow.
- The Catch (Fees): Pearler Micro charges a flat $1.70 per month to invest in a single fund, or $2.30 for multiple funds (balances under $100 are fee-free). If you graduate to buying full shares directly (CHESS sponsored), they charge a flat brokerage fee of $6.50 per trade.
The Verdict
Micro-investing apps are the training wheels of the investing world. They are fantastic for teaching you the emotional discipline of watching your balance go up and down without panicking. However, due to the flat monthly fees, you should aim to either build your balance up to a few thousand dollars quickly, or eventually graduate to buying ETFs directly through a low-cost broker.

Try testing a low balance (e.g. $150) vs a high balance (e.g. $5,000).
App Fee Structure (2026):
$5.50 flat monthly fee ($66.00/year).
Alert: Your effective fee rate is higher than your expected market return. The flat fees are completely wiping out your profits, and you are mathematically losing money every year by using this app at this balance.
